New Truck for the CLA

Association General Manager Paul W. Swanson.
The Chautauqua Lake Association and The Johnson Foundation established by John
Alfred and Oscar Johnson Memorial Trust have a mutual determination in serving the
communities surrounding Chautauqua Lake for everyone to enjoy.
Paul Swanson: “With this new truck we have been able to reach areas that the barges can
not go. We have provided a driver and crew with the truck to help cleanup the shoreline.
This generous donation from The Johnson Foundation will benefit owners who find it too
difficult to have the CLA come by barge to remove shoreline weeds. Many of our
members willingly pile the weeds up on their dock or their property, so we can come with
the truck and pick them up. Having this truck is essential to the CLA summer program
to provide the services we want to implement to help the community. The Chautauqua
Lake Association’s Board of Directors is so appreciative of all that the foundations do for
us and the community.”
Carole Sellstrom: “As The Johnson Foundation Coordinator, I am pleased that this grant
has gone to such a worthy cause and that it will benefit so many visitors, residents and the
various children’s camps to keep this beautiful lake clean with the assistance of this truck.”
Tad Wright: “The Chautauqua Lake Association’s commitment to service the 42 miles of
shoreline every year is such an aid in the appearance to those who use Chautauqua Lake
in the summer season. Not all lakes provide these services and we have been working our
crews in double shifts and on Saturday mornings to try to keep control of the weeds and
the shoreline.”
CLA Has Additional Crews on Lake

Chautauqua Lake Association President Edward P. Wright and General Manager
Paul Swanson have initiated the summer program for the shoreline cleanup
and harvesting programs.
President Edward P. Wright said: “The CLA Board of Directors is pleased
to announce that we have hired our summer staff and given jobs to area
students who have worked for the CLA while acquiring their education.
While last year was a very challenging year with tremendous weed growth,
the CLA with the county’s assistance is adding a second shift to combat the
problem and assist the lakefront owners with shoreline cleanup. The Board
has authorized the purchase of another new harvester to be delivered later
this summer to help with invasive weed growth in the southern basin.”
Paul Swanson stated: “As of June 1st I have positioned the equipment to cover
all three areas of the lake; the north basin at Mayville, Shore Acres in
Bemus Point and the southern basin our home base. We worked especially long in
Burtis Bay cleaning up after the winter accumulation and are now working two
shifts from all three areas from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to
noon. The Johnson Foundation purchased a new small truck to aid in the removal
of shoreline debris in areas where the larger equipment is unable to get into.
We are hoping to be able to cover all problem areas should we face another year
similar to last year. We will be doing what we always do and that is to remove
weeds around docks and near shore areas, keep the channels open, and cleanup
debris after storms to try to keep the lake clean for all to enjoy.”

The Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club and the Chautauqua Yacht Club hosted
a Summer Dinner Dance for all members and invited guests of both clubs
on the shores of Chautauqua Lake at the Lakewood Club, with the benefits
of the gathering going to the Chautauqua Lake Association. This festive
evening started with a special Caribbean theme followed by great dance
music by Carl Motyka. A CLA Harvester was anchored near the club and the
CLA provided informational material on its mission and programs.
Paul Swanson: “Donna and I were so pleased to have this opportunity to
join in with the communities that support us. The evening was a perfect
summer night for this affair that was well attended and we find pleasure
in this support from so many people.”
Terry L. Havens-Turner: “As past president of the Chautauqua Lake Association
the Silent Auction organized by Jennifer Delancey yielded a delightful
surprise of having three members donate $800 a piece to have the visual
experience of joining the crew while harvesting the lake.
A good time was had by all.”
President Tad Wright: “For the first season ever the CLA has crews working
on the lake from dawn to dusk. Without these and other additional funds
we would not be able to afford this season’s extra efforts. The generosity
of these two Yacht Clubs is very much appreciated.”
